Hi.
My name is Karen Elizabeth Harvey. I am a former professional contemporary dance artist and recently was in school for Interior Design.
I grew up dancing and received a BFA in contemporary dance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Upon graduation I became a professional contemporary dancer with freelance work experience in New York City and Berlin, Germany. I taught dance, performed with multiple dance companies, created dance films, choreographed and performed improvisation. While living in NYC, I also worked as a personal trainer and completed a meditation teacher training. Whether it's creating art, dance, design or working with presence, I see my work as a conversation between space and the body.
In my earlier choreography, I was engaged in the investigation of dance as an evolution of site-specific performances, and the interweaving of musical composition with dance composition. More recent choreographies focused on improvisation and searched for how different spaces affect perception, movement and experience. My choreographic works have been presented on shared programs internationally. Past artistic residencies include: Mount Tremper Arts in New York (2012), Lake Studios Berlin in Germany (2014-2015), and Riu d'Art in Riba-Roja d’Ebre, Spain (2018).
I have performed on stages and in galleries in New York City, Berlin, Mexico and Spain. While living in New York City, I had the pleasure of dancing for a number of choreographers including Neta Pulvermacher, Rebecca Lazier, Jin Ju Song-Begin and Rebecca Warner Breheney. I was also part of Dai Jian’s Anti-tilted Dialogues (improvisation group), and We Are Your Friends (A cappella and movement performance group). During my time in Berlin, I collaborated with members of Company HAA and performed with the improvisation and music performance series MusikTanzNullDreißig. I have also performed at festivals such as the American Dance Festival and Performática.
For about nine years, I worked as a personal fitness trainer in New York City. I also taught dance workshops to underserved children through FreeArtsNYC. While living in Berlin, I taught contemporary dance and improvisation to both pre-professionals and amateur dancers at the university level.
I've continued my dance studies post graduation with a plethora of artists in New York City and Berlin. As well as, at dance festivals such as Performática (MX), Impulztanz (AT), TanzFest (DE), American Dance Festival (US), NYU-Tisch (US), Jose Limón Summer Intensive (US), and The North Carolina Governor’s School (US).
Over the past several years, I've worked as an intern/assistant for a commercial health and wellness interior design company based in Raleigh, NC. Including tasks such as mood boards, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, furniture & material selections, interior design blogs and more.
